ImageCat joins the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) team to document the effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita
Long Beach, CA - November, 2005. The Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) deployed three teams of technical experts to perform an assessment of physical structures damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. ImageCat was a part of the technical team and deployed the VIEWS field data collection and visualization system.
The deployment took place between 16-21 October, 2005. This effort was primarily directed at collecting perishable data from the field, and to collect and mine damage and environmental data from other sources. The team also aimed at correlating the damage data with environmental data, and identifying building codes and practices used in the affected areas.
The NIST reconnaissance effort will result in a report documenting its findings. ImageCat has been entrusted with the responsibility to be the Technical Coordinator in producing a final NIST reconnaissance report that (1) provides a detailed roadmap for subsequent analysis and performance assessment, (2) identifies specific provisions in standards and codes, and practices to be studied, and (3) identifies any immediate implications for practice, standards, and codes.
