AMPIS - Automated Management of Pavement Inspection System.

Buffalo, NY- September 2004.   In September 2004, Dr. Howard Chung presented a paper on a GIS-based automated in-situ road surface distress inspection and management system, AMPIS, at the ASNT conference on Structural and Material Technologies Conference in Buffalo, NY. AMPIS, initially developed in collaboration with the University of California at Irvine, utilizes video imagery within the framework of a GIS software system (See figure below). An ArcGIS platform integrates image processing and spatial analysis as part of a full-scale metropolitan highway surface distress detection and data fusion/management program. A review of current procedures for pavement inspection (e.g., Army 1982’s Pavement Management System, PMS) suggests that a GIS-based system that integrates video technology within the framework of PMS has the potential to revolutionize pavement inspections and maintenance.
