The Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (MCEER) publishes ImageCat, Inc. Bam earthquake reconnaissance report: Bam (Iran) Earthquake of December 26, 2003 - Preliminary Reconnaissance Using Remotely Sensed Data and the VIEWS (Visualizing Impacts of Earthquakes With Satellites) system Long Beach, CA - January 2004. This report details the use of satellite imagery to assess urban damage
caused by the Bam, Iran earthquake of Friday, December 26, 2003. The
earthquake killed tens of thousands of people and destroyed or damaged an
estimated 90% of the mostly mud-brick buildings. The report also documents
the first deployment of VIEWS, by the EERI reconnaissance team. VIEWS is a portable notebook-based reconnaissance system that
links 60cm Quickbird satellite imagery to a real-time GPS feed. The system
provides city-wide coverage, and enables the visualization of damage
sustained by individual structures.
