Caltrans awards the REDARS team a contract to study the Seismic Vulnerability of California Highways

Long Beach, CA - July 2003.   Over the past several years, a research team led by Stuart Werner of Seismic Systems and Engineering Consultants has been working on a GIS-based software tool that will estimate direct and indirect losses caused by damage and disruption to complex highway systems. This research – which is ongoing at the Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research – has led to REDARS 1.0. REDARS 1.0 and a future, more sophisticated version of REDARS (version 2.0) are being pilot tested on highway networks throughout California by Caltrans. ImageCat is providing support in this project in the area of transportation system modeling. Other key participants include Geodesy, Natural Hazards Management Consultants, and Professor Jim Moore at the University of Southern California.
