ImageCat begins third year as a research partner in MCEER's FHWA program Long Beach, CA - January 2, 2002. ImageCat has been awarded its third contract to participate in MCEER's FHWA program. Specifically, ImageCat will be completing its review and validation of the REDARS (Risk from Earthquake Damage to Roadway Systems) software program. In addition to this work, ImageCat will modify the transportation module of REDARS to improve estimates of post-earthquake travel. ImageCat has been supporting Seismic Systems & Engineering Consultants in Oakland on this task. SSEC is the developer of the REDARS program and has applied this methodology to the Memphis, Tennessee area. ImageCat - as part of the validation process - is applying the REDARS program to the Los Angeles basin; specifically examining how well the program predicts damage from the 1994 Northridge earthquake. We plan to test each major module in REDARS (seismic hazard, bridge damage or fragility, traffic congestion and loss estimation) to determine how precisely these models match actual earthquake data from the Northridge earthquake. In REDARS, losses are measured by the delays in traffic that are caused by complete or partial closure of highways as a result of earthquake damage. It is expected that REDARS will be deployed nationally to help local and regional transportation agencies assess
their earthquake risk. It is hoped that information from REDARS will help in the planning, design and construction
of new highway facilities, the retrofit of existing facilities, the implementation of emergency response activities
after major disasters and in recovery efforts to facilitate the repair of damaged facilities. ![]()
