Earthquake Information

ImageCat, Inc. deploys VIEWS (Visualizing Impacts of Earthquakes With Satellites) system in Parkfield, CA to test out rapid field reconnaissance.

Parkfield, CA- October 2004.  The VIEWS (Visualizing Impacts of Earthquakes With Satellites) field reconnaissance system was deployed in Parkfield, CA to test its capabilities in collecting damage data and in establishing a permanent visual record of damage to structures after the earthquake. A strong earthquake (magnitude 6.0) struck the Central Coast of California on September 28, 2004, about 7 miles SSE of Parkfield, at a depth of approximately 5 mile. The Parkfield area is rural and sparsely populated and the damage sustained to the few existing buildings was primarily non-structural. The deployment was essentially an exercise to test the rapid data collection process for post-earthquake damage situations by walking surveys. VIEWS has been traditionally deployed from a car (as in the aftermath of Hurricane Charley and Ivan in Florida) but for the Parkfield case, the ImageCat team implemented VIEWS primarily on foot as a close-up visual inspection on foot.

VIEWS is a notebook-based system, originally developed for earthquake with funding from MCEER (the Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research). It integrates satellite imagery with real-time Global Positioning System (GPS) readings and map layers and operates in conjunction with a digital video recorder. It can be deployed either from a moving vehicle or on foot during a walking tour.
