REDARS software

REDARS®

REDARS (Risks from Earthquake Damage to Roadway Systems) is a software package that estimates earthquake damage and the subsequent effects on travel time and the regional economy. Transportation and planning agencies use REDARS to assess the benefits of mitigation. For real-time emergency response, REDARS can be used to assess detour routes and prioritize reconstruction.

An innovative aspect of REDARS is the Import Wizard, which allows users to import data easily into the software. The REDARS Import Wizard generates a transportation network from the Federal Highway Administration's NHPN and HPMS databases that integrates NBI bridges and local Origin/Destination (OD) data into a format suitable for analysis with REDARS. It facilitates input data development by processing standard data formats into a network suitable for REDARS.

Key features of REDARS include:

  • Ground motion estimates for actual and scenario earthquake events
  • Calculates bridge damage and resulting congestion
  • Estimates impact on traffic flow and travel time
  • Estimates economic losses as a function of travel delay
  • Sophisticated statistical methods to reduce number of simulations needed to model probabilistic events

REDARS was developed for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Multi-Disciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (MCEER) by the REDARS development team, which includes: Seismic Systems & Engineering Consultants, Geodesy, Natural Hazards Management Inc., and The Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Southern California.
