A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck in Myanmar on Friday, March 28th, 2025. The epicenter was near Mandalay, the country’s second largest city. The earthquake impacted much of the country. Over 10,000 buildings are reported either destroyed or severely damaged. Infrastructure is damaged as well, leaving large areas of the country without power, and rescue and recovery hampered by damaged bridges and roads. Authorities have reported that, while the current casualty count exceeds 2,700, it is expected to rise to over 3,000. The quake, Myanmar’s second largest recorded, was felt in Bangladesh, India, Thailand, and China.

Two historically destructive wildfires are burning in Southern California. Unusually strong Santa Ana winds and dry conditions created ideal conditions for wildfire in the region. The Palisades fire started on January 7th along the Pacific coast, north of Santa Monica. The fire destroyed much of the Pacific Palisades neighborhood between Santa Monica and Malibu. The fire has burned almost 24,000,000 acres and is threatening over 12,000 structures. CAL FIRE estimates more than 5,000 structures have been destroyed. It is 14% contained. The Eaton fire, which also began on the 7th, started in the San Gabrial mountains and moved south into densely populated Altadena and the City of Pasadena. It has burned over 14,000 acres and is 33% contained. CAL FIRE estimates that over 7,000 structures are destroyed and almost 40,000 threatened. The intense demand for water has depleted the supply, further hampering fire suppression. Four smaller fires, the Hurst, Lidia, Sunset, and Kenneth, have been largely or completely contained.

Hurricane Milton came ashore along Florida’s Gulf Coast as a Category 3 storm on Wednesday, October 9. Milton was the third hurricane to hit Florida this year. The storm made landfall near Siesta Key, about 70 miles south of Tampa. It spawned numerous tornados in the region. Some areas received more than 18 inches of rain and it, as well as storm surge, caused flooding in some areas such as Plant City, inland from Tampa. At least eight people were killed, and millions are currently without power.

Hurricane Helene brought death and destruction along a 500-mile path through the Southeastern United States, from Florida to the Blue Ridge mountains. The storm made landfall along the Big Bend section of Florida’s Gulf coast on Thursday, September 26 as a category 4 hurricane. The storm continued north into Georgia before moving over the Blue Ridge Mountains. Some areas received well over a foot of rain, causing rivers and creeks to flood, straining dams, and taking out power infrastructure. The death toll currently stands at 237, but experts expect it to rise.

The mountainous region of western North Carolina was devastated by catastrophic flooding and mudslides. The area was already saturated by rain by the storm’s outer bands before the eye of the storm hit. Experts are calling the extent of damage biblical. Virtually all infrastructure is damaged or destroyed in affected areas. Much of Asheville, Black Mountain, Boone, Swannanoa, Chimney Rock, and many other surrounding smaller towns are heavily damaged or destroyed.

Hurricane Francine came ashore in Louisiana on Wednesday, September 11 as a Category 2 storm. After quickly gaining power from warm water in the Gulf of Mexico, Francine made landfall in Terrebonne Parish and moved northeast, sending the eyewall of the storm over New Orleans. Ocean water surged into coastal communities and the storm’s heavy rain overwhelmed sewer pumps in some areas, causing street flooding. Hundreds of thousands of people are without power. Now a tropical storm, Francine is moving north, bringing the potential for flooding to multiple states.

Hurricane Beryl is the earliest Category 5 hurricane recorded to form in the Atlantic. In the first week of July 2024, the storm tore a destructive path across eastern Caribbean islands, including Grenada, Jamaica, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, where some islands sustained extensive damage. Beryl later passed over Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula as a Cat 2, then passed through the Gulf of Mexico to the Texas coastline as a Cat 1. In Texas, the storm cut power to millions of people, closed oil ports, caused localized flooding, and killed 13 people. Beryl was downgraded to a tropical depression as it moved across the U.S., bringing heavy rain and tornados to the Midwest and Northeast.
