Hurricane Helene, September 2024
30 Sep 2024
Hurricane Helene brought death and destruction along a 500-mile path through the Southeastern United States, from Florida to the Blue Ridge mountains. The storm made landfall along the Big Bend section of Florida’s Gulf coast on Thursday, September 26 as a category 4 hurricane. The storm continued north into Georgia before moving over the Blue Ridge Mountains. Some areas received well over a foot of rain, causing rivers and creeks to flood, straining dams, and taking out power infrastructure. The death toll currently stands at 237, but experts expect it to rise.
The mountainous region of western North Carolina was devastated by catastrophic flooding and mudslides. The area was already saturated by rain by the storm’s outer bands before the eye of the storm hit. Experts are calling the extent of damage biblical. Virtually all infrastructure is damaged or destroyed in affected areas. Much of Asheville, Black Mountain, Boone, Swannanoa, Chimney Rock, and many other surrounding smaller towns are heavily damaged or destroyed.
