M6.1 Earthquake in Wenping, China

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck southern China’s Yunnan Province on Sunday, August 3, 2014. According to the USGS, the quake was centered northwest of the city of Wenping in Ludian county and occurred at a depth of 10 km. Official sources have reported that at least 398 people were killed and another 1,800 were injured. Approximately 12,000 homes collapsed in the region, where many older buildings are constructed of brick. The mountainous area is prone to strong earthquakes.
