Flooding in India and Pakistan

09 Sep 2014

Heavy summer monsoon rains have caused major flooding in parts of India and Pakistan. The Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir and the Punjab province in Pakistan as well as the Pakistani-administered areas of Kashmir, Azad Jammu and Gilgit Baltistan have all been affected by damaging floods. Authorities reported the death toll from the floods in India is at least 150 and 231 in Pakistan. Hundreds of thousands of people have been stranded and the militaries in both countries are struggling to evacuate the affected areas; the effort has been severely hampered by downed communication systems and flooded roads.

The rains have ceased, but the flood waters are expected to flow downstream, potentially submerging hundreds of villages.
