King Fire, northern California
22 Sep 2014
The King Fire in northern California, located about 60 miles east of Sacramento, has burned more than 87,000 acres since it began on September 13, 2014. Although most of the burned land is located within the Eldorado National Forest, the fire has destroyed 10 homes and threatens more than 21,000 structures. Approximately 3,000 residents have been evacuated from the area.
California has had a higher than average number of wildfires this year, largely due to severe drought gripping the region.
