M8.3 Earthquake in Chile, September 2015

A powerful M8.3 earthquake struck near the coast of Chile on Wednesday, September 16, 2015. According to the USGS the quake’s epicenter was about 29 miles west of Illapel, Chile at a depth of 15.5 miles. The quake caused tsunami waves to hit the shoreline near the epicenter, the largest measuring about 15 feet. About 1 million people were evacuated from the coastline before the waves struck. Thirteen deaths have been reported thus far. Aftershocks continue to rattle the region.
