Flooding in Louisiana, August 2016

Heavy downpours of rain have inundated parts of southern Louisiana the week of August 14, 2016, causing devastating flooding. Eleven people were killed and thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes.  It is estimated that at least 40,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed from flood waters. Twenty parishes have been declared a federal major disaster.  The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has classified the flooding as a once in a 500 year event.
