Dam burst in Kenya, May 2018

10 May 2018

Heavy rains since March have caused flooding and a dam break in Kenya. The Patel dam, near the town of Solai, burst on May 10 from the pressure from accumulated rainwater. At least 40 people were killed by the deluge and over 2,000 people are left homeless. Flooding is country-wide, but the low lying plains are receiving the brunt. Floodwaters have damaged structures, infrastructure, and agriculture and left hundreds of thousands of people displaced.

While this is usually the rainy season in Kenya, this year’s rains have been unusually heavy and are following severe drought.
