Failed dam in Laos, July 2018
26 Jul 2018
A dam failed on Monday, July 23 in the Attapeu Province of Laos, near the border of Vietnam and Cambodia, flooding at least seven villages downriver. The dam, part of a hydroelectric project that was under construction, held water diverted from a tributary of the Mekong River. The floodwaters spread to Cambodia on Wednesday, destroying homes and leaving thousands of people displaced. Authorities in the Stung Treng Province are evacuating residents of villages downstream. Ongoing rain is contributing to the flood waters.
