Cyclone Tauktae made landfall along the west coast of India on Monday, May 17, 2021 with wind speeds equivalent to a Category 3 storm, the strongest recorded in the area. The storm’s strong winds and heavy rain caused damage and flooding to the coastal states of Gujarat, where it initially landed, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra. The damage further compounded India’s humanitarian crisis, as the country has recently been severely impacted by COVID 19.

The Arabian Sea is rising in temperature due to global warming and experts warn that this will result in more frequent and stronger cyclones.
