Super Typhoon Rai, the Philippines, Dec 2021

Super Typhoon Rai, locally known as Odette, came ashore on Siargao Island in the Philippines on Thursday, December 16, 2021, bringing heavy rain which caused widespread flooding and landslides. The storm’s strength at landfall was equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane, making it one of the strongest typhoons to hit southern Philippines on record. Damage to communities was severe and hundreds of thousands of people were displaced. The current death toll is over three hundred but is expected to rise.
