The nation of Greece has been battling dozens of wildfires that broke out in the second half of July, including large fires on the islands of Rhodes and Corfu.  Approximately 19,000 people were evacuated from Rhodes over the weekend of July 22nd, followed by more on Corfu and Evia this week. Fires have erupted on the mainland as well, including a fire west of Athens. Tourism in Greece is at its height in July and August, further compounding the dangerous situation. This rash of wildfires coincides with a severe heatwave that has crippled southern Europe and northern Africa.  Dangerous wildfires have also erupted in Italy, Portugal, Tunisia, and Algeria.
