Hurricane Idalia made landfall in Florida early Wednesday, August 30, as a Category 3 storm. The hurricane was the first in 125 years to come ashore along the upper western region of Florida called Big Bend. The storm brought heavy rains, strong winds and historic storm surge in some areas between the Big Bend region and Tampa Bay.  The surge inundated towns along the coast and there is concern that high tides later in the day will worsen the situation.

Idalia weakened as it moved east across Florida and into Georgia, where it is now a Category 1. Power outages are affecting over 300, 000 people across the two states. The storm is expected to sweep north along the coast of the Carolinas before moving out into the Atlantic Ocean.
