A powerful storm in eastern Libya caused devastating flooding on Sunday, September 10. The storm, part of the same system that created catastrophic flooding in Greece the week prior, inundated the region and caused two dams to break, sending torrents of water into the town of Derna. Over five thousand people were killed and thousands more are missing, including six thousand in Derna alone.

The temperature of the Mediterranean Sea is currently higher than average, which further fueled the storm.
