A strong and shallow earthquake struck in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco on Friday, September 8.  While the quake, magnitude 6.8, was felt throughout the country, the epicenter was located in the Ighil area, a region of small farming villages in Al-Haouz province. Entire villages of mud-brick homes in the province are reportedly destroyed.  The death toll is now at 2,500 but is expected to climb. Damage occurred distant from the epicenter as well, including to buildings in the historic old city of Marrakech. This was the deadliest quake in the country since 1960.
