Hurricane Otis was a Category 5 storm when it made landfall along the southern Pacific coast of Mexico near the city of Acapulco on Wednesday, October 25th. The hurricane strengthened rapidly before landfall. The intensity of the storm caught residents by surprise and offered little time for preparation. Strong winds downed power lines and methods of communication for approximately 900,000 people, and heavy rainfall caused flash flooding and landslides.  At least 48 people were killed. An estimated 80% of hotels in Acapulco were damaged, as well as hundreds of thousands of homes.
