M7.8 earthquake in western Japan, January 2024

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck western Japan on Monday, January 1, 2024. The quake was centered in the Ishikawa prefecture of Japan’s main island of Honshu. Thousands of homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed and at least 70 people were killed. The Japan Meteorological Agency initially issued a major tsunami warning which was downgraded, then lifted.
